Love the Home You're With

Your home is so much more than where you live. It’s where you rest, where you connect, and where you nourish your mind and body. In many ways, your home is part of your identity, a part that you should love. These simple exercises will help you nurture that love for a happier life and a happier home.

First, ask yourself: What would it look like for you to love your home?

Think about someone you love - your spouse, your best friend, or your children. Now, think about what you love about this person. For many of us, it’s who they are, how they make you feel, what they bring to your life and what you can add to theirs.  It’s the connection you have with them, your shared values, and the joy you feel in their presence.

It’s important to remember that what you love about this person is something they already offer, not a characteristic you want to change in them. Your home, likewise, has redeeming qualities just as it is. When you think about your home, what are the first words that come to mind? Are they positive descriptions?  What are the things you love most about your home?

Regardless of how you feel now, you can begin to love the home you’re with. Here’s how:

  1. Being grateful for what you love about your home ‘as is.’

  2. Asking yourself, “How does my home support me in living the life I desire?”

  3. Making a list of the things you would change about your home to better support you.  This could be how it looks and feels; how the space could better represent you.

  4. Starting small and making changes, one by one.

Loving your home starts with loving yourself.

It’s about giving yourself permission to surround yourself with things that matter and make you come alive. Take a moment and think about the things you love and how you might incorporate those things into your home.

  • Do you love to read? Put your books front and center.

  • Are you outdoorsy? Post photos and adventure quotes that will inspire you to get outside.

  • Coffee or tea lover? Curate a station in your kitchen to jumpstart your morning routine.

  • Movie buff? Reimagine your bedroom or living room in a way that you can leisurely enjoy the show even more.

Your home is an extension of who you are. So remember, when you are doing what you love, in a home that supports you, happiness will follow.
